How net metering works
Net metering lets you export excess solar power to the Meralco grid and receive credits on your bill. When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home uses, the surplus flows into the grid and your meter runs backward.
At night or on cloudy days, when your panels produce less than you need, you draw from the grid normally. Your monthly bill reflects the net difference — the credits offset your consumption.
Under Philippine rules (Renewable Energy Act and ERC Resolution), credits are carried over month to month. Any remaining credits at the end of the year are forfeited, so it's best to right-size your system.
The application process
Step 1: Choose a solar installer — Your installer handles most of the paperwork. Ensure they are DOE-accredited and experienced with Meralco net metering applications.
Step 2: Submit application to Meralco — Complete the Net Metering Application Form with one-line diagram, system specifications, and electrical plan. Processing takes 2–4 weeks.
Step 3: Meralco inspection and meter installation — Meralco inspects your installation and replaces your standard meter with a bidirectional net metering meter. This takes 1–2 more weeks.
Step 4: Certificate of Compliance — After inspection, you receive your Certificate of Compliance (COC), and your system goes live. Total timeline: 4–8 weeks from application to operation.
