Standard solar panel sizes
Most residential solar panels in the Philippines are 60-cell or 72-cell. A standard 60-cell panel measures approximately 1.7m × 1.0m (about 1.7 sqm) and produces 350–450 watts. A 72-cell panel measures about 2.0m × 1.0m (about 2.0 sqm) and produces 400–550 watts.
For a typical 5kW system, you need approximately 12–15 panels, covering 20–25 square meters of roof area. Most Filipino homes have 50–120 sqm of usable roof space, so fitting a solar array is rarely a problem.
How to calculate what fits on your roof
First, measure your roof area: length × width for each roof plane. Subtract 0.5m from each edge for setback requirements (mandated by the Philippine Electrical Code for fire safety access).
Divide the usable area by 1.7 (for 60-cell panels) to get the maximum panel count. Multiply by the panel wattage (e.g., 400W) to get the maximum system size in kW.
South-facing roof planes are ideal in the Philippines. East- and west-facing roofs are also good. North-facing roofs get limited direct sunlight and are not recommended.
